The Importance of Photography

A) Which TED Talk did you find most interesting? Any explain why you found it interesting.
I found the ocean photography TEDtalk the most interesting. The reason it was my favourite was because of how gorgeous the photos were. I love underwater photography, and the way they turn out. Photos taken underwater always have such captivating aspects to them, and they are much different than regular photography. I wish to get a chance to bring an underwater camera out somewhere with me and take photos just like the ones seen in the video. Overall, this is the video that really caught my eye.

B) How did you relate to the speaker's experience? (It could be the way they think, the reason they love photography, their experiences remind you of your own)
The very first line the speaker said in the video was, "As a kid I used to dream about the ocean." I can relate to this 100%. When I was younger, around the age of nine or ten, I went to MarineLand and after that trip, I decided that all I wanted to be when I was older was a marine biologist. I wasn't the biggest fan of many animals but I was in love with whales and dolphins. The speaker had mentioned that he enjoyed underwater photography because it gave such a "wow" factor. I agree with him, photos of marine animals turn out really beautiful because they give us a pop of colour and contrast.

C) c. List all the ways you use photography, the ways you use photography as a photographer taking pictures and as a viewer viewing photographs. List them in chart format:

 Photographer
 Viewer
- Portraits: (photos of my friends and family)
- Selfies
- The sky
- Books/Book shelves
- Food
- Statues
 - Artwork
 - Groups of friends
 - Sunsets/Sunrises
 - Buildings
 - Celebrities (paparazzi photos)
 - Advertisements
 - Plants
 - Billboards
 - Sculptures
 - Artwork

D) Describe why photography is important to you and why you take pictures or view photographs.
I will admit, I'm one of those people who enjoy taking pictures for the sake of their Instagram feed, but that's not the whole reason why I love photography. I like taking photos to capture the moment so I can look back on them in years ahead. I also love sharing photos I take on social media because I like seeing other people's pictures online, and I figure they might want to see mine. Believe it or not, photography is an important part of my life. I take photos everyday, whether it's a selfie, a picture of the sky or my bookshelf, I take at least one picture a day.

Purposes of Photography

I found this image at http://integrity.aristotle.com/wp-content/themes/Integrity/img/banner_2.jpg which is a picture of a girl holding her ID card. This an example of how photography is used to provide a form of societal control. The picture used in your ID, driver's license, etc are photos used as identification as to who you are.

I found this image at https://img.rt.com/files/news/1e/80/40/00/trapwire-nextbus-surveillance-cubic.jpg which is a photo of people through the lens of a surveillance camera. This is another great example of how photography is used to provide a form of societal control. This photo shows how surveillance cameras provide us with helpful images. We use security cameras to see whats around us and to make sure nothing illegal or bad happens.

I obtained this image from http://www.ipsnews.net/Library/2016/10/brasil_.jpg which is a photo of a mother with her children in Brazil. This is an excellent example of how photos are used to inform the public. Poverty is an issue that occurs in this particular part of Brazil in which the photo was taken. It shows society how other places deal with poverty and don't live in places with nicer living conditions.

I found this image at https://qzprod.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/ap_16284076504655-e1476072089891.jpg?w=3776 which is a photo of Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton at the second Presidential Debate this year. This is an example of how photos are used to inform the public. We are currently in a Presidential Election year, and debates occur to help change the opinions of voters. Photos like the one above help inform the public about what's going on in politics.

I found this image at http://www.impawards.com/2016/posters/middle_school_the_worst_years_of_my_life_ver4.jpg. This is an image of a poster for the movie, "Middle School": The Worst Years of My Life." It's a really good example of how images are used to advertise. Movie posters are part of what gets the public interested in watching the movie. For instance, the one I chose as an example is a movie for kids, and all the doodles and colours make it more eye-catching to children.

I got this image from https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQpZPZuxdYVrjBubzxB_WAx3H6MdQXLPRl1SYDh0NSbk3swxLEKlw which is a photo of  a subway advertisement on a billboard. It's another example of how images are used to advertise to the public. The photo shows Subway's new breakfast combo deal, trying to persuade people to come try it out.

I found this image at https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/81/66/f0/8166f0de92ab2c3dce954caef1b6becb.jpg which is a
picture of a biology textbook. It is an example of how photos are used to educate the public. The cover of this textbook has a dragonfly which represents part of what biology is.

I found this image at https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51UP2sJhbVL.jpg which is a diagram of the effects of smoking. This is another example of how images are used to educate people. Diagrams such as the one shown are used to give the reader a better idea of what things look like. This particular diagram shows the different parts of the body that are effected by smoking.

I got this image from http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/harrypotter/images/f/fb/Trio.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100425223544 and it is an image of the Harry Potter movie cast. This is an example of how images are used to entertain the public. The photo I have chosen particularly catches the attention of people like myself, fans of Harry Potter. This type of photo gets fans of the movies excited by seeing the actors together.

I got this last photo from https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/86/56/f1/8656f19257cb4c96cfe9048cbada8459.jpg. It's another picture showing how some images are used to entertain others. This is a photo of a baby and a dog dressed up in reindeer outfits. Photos like this are normally trying to send out a laugh to the public.
